Kunz_Howard_Patricia_rgb_400x500Patricia Kunz Howard, PhD, RN, CEN, CPEN, NE-BC, TCRN, FAEN, FAAN, serves on the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Board of Directors. ENA is the specialty nursing association serving the emergency nursing profession through research, publications, professional development, and injury prevention.

Howard is the Enterprise Director for Emergency Services at University of Kentucky Healthcare (UKHC). In this position she is responsible for the clinical and business operations for emergency services at an academic medical center verified as an adult and pediatric trauma center, the UK Chandler Hospital and Makenna David Pediatric Emergency Center, UKHC Emergency Communications and Ground Transport, and the UK Good Samaritan Emergency Department. In her 16 years at UKHC she has held several positions including Operations Manager for Emergency Services and Emergency Services Staff Development Specialist at the UK Chandler Hospital. She has also concurrently held the position of EMS Training Coordinator for Lexington Division of Fire and Emergency Services since 1990.

Howard has been actively involved in ENA at the local, state, and national level since 1990. She has been President of the Bluegrass Chapter and the Kentucky ENA State Council. Howard has been a TNCC and ENPC faculty member for more than 20 years as she believes that ensuring emergency nurses have the knowledge needed to provide excellent care is essential. She is committed to ensuring that emergency nurses have the resources they need to provide care for every patient.

Howard was the 34th president of ENA. She served on the ENA Board of Directors from 2000-2006, and has served as a Trustee and Chairperson of the ENA Foundation. Howard has served on several national committees: The American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care committee (2010-2013); the Emergency Nurses Association Future of Nursing Committee (2011-2012), and served as the 2013- 2014 ENA Trauma Committee Chairperson. Howard is passionate about emergency nursing and the care of patients and families. She is a strong advocate for family presence during resuscitation and pediatric injury prevention. Howard was the primary author of the “ENA Gun Safety: It’s No Accident” training program, and serves as a Co-section Editor for the research to practice column of the Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal.

Howard was the 2011 recipient of the Judith C. Kelleher Award from ENA for consistently demonstrating excellence in emergency nursing, making significant contributions to the profession of nursing, and to the specialty of emergency nursing. In 2010 she was recognized as one of the 50 most distinguished alumni by the University of Kentucky College of Nursing. In 2012, Howard was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.

Howard earned her ADN from Salem College (Salem, WV), a BSN, MSN, and PhD in nursing from the University of Kentucky. Her research interests focus on injury prevention initiatives and emergency department pain management. She is also a member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, the National Association of Emergency Medical Services Educators, and the American Heart Association.
